The Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism did an extensive survey to give us a good look at the ‘State of the News Media’. Its a great insight into the way things are trending this days. Im including some of the highlights…but you can check it all out at

Mobile is the big deal right now. It’s driving news consumption heavily and tablet devices like the iPAD are making a big difference. News consumers are hoping online between 10pm – midnight mostly. Newspapers and magazines maybe getting a big boost because of it. When it comes to money, for the most part, technology providers are making the big bucks, but the news operations are not.

-44% of adults use smartphones

-1 in 5 adults owns a tablet (that # doubled between sept and jan)

-20% plus of americans get news on mobile devices on a regular basis

-80% of them still get news in other ways, including conventional computer

-Display ads generated $12.4 billion in 2011 (up 24%).

-Banner ads, the largest segment of ads within display , grew 22% in 2011))

NEWSPAPER SUBSCRIPTIONS

-Print circulation numbers have flattened. Whew. People still want the ink on the fingertips!

-Pay to play is gaining traction thanks to the success of the New York Times. By the end of 2011, 150 newspapers moved to this model (11% of all remaining newspapers)..Pew expects 100 more to go to this model this year. TV:

TV NEWS

-Viewership overall is up!

-Network evening news grew 4.5%..the first uptick in a decade

-Local news grew in morning and late evening, first growth seen in 5 years

-Cable news audiences grew by 1% after falling in 2010

Pew attributes some of this to big news events of last year: Arab spring, Japan tsunami, other major weather.

SOCIAL MEDIA

9% of Americans get their news from facebook and twitter

(7% of that is facebook)

only 13% of all american adults are even on twitter

CABLE NEWS

CNN up 16% in prime time, 5% in daytime.

MSNBC grew 3% in prime, 20% in daytime.

FOX is sinking.. 2nd straight year. 3% decline in prime, 2% daytime

OVERALL TRENDS

Privacy is becoming a much larger issue.

2/3rds of people don’t like pop ups and tracking technology (doh).

Younger people are less concerned about it than older people.

Wet weather usually keeps the graffiti vandals at home. But WSDOT says with the mild weather, roadside spray paint scribbles are showing up more and forcing crews out in the field to clean it up.
“We have a lot more of it to deal with and a lot less people to do it,” says Vickie Sheehan, spokesperson for WSDOT.
Last year crews cleaned up about 226,000 sq/ft of graffiti!
WSDOT does not have a designated ‘graffiti removal’ team so workers are being pulled from other project like pot hole repair, snow removal and bridge work to cover up the mess. Crews use power washers and paint to remove the graffiti.
“I think its crazy the places people get to,” says maintenance supervisor Tim Ditch. “They’ll walk out on ledges only six inches wide. We can’t do that so we have to do the work at night with a bucket truck.”
WSDOT’s Northwest Region spends between $120,000 and $145,000 per year for graffiti removal from the Canadian border to the King/Pierce County line. Graffiti removal cost for the region was $120,430 in 2011.
The Seattle “hot spots” include the Lakeview wall alongside northbound I-5, the I-5/I-90 interchange (Jose Reyes Bridge), the northbound I-5 columns by the old Rainier brewery, most sound walls along I-5, and along the Mercer Street ramps and tunnel.
“Its defacing public property,” Sheehan says. “If we commission someone to do a mural I would consider that artwork. This is just a nuisance.”

Today is a sad day in Washington State. A man who devotes his life to protecting the public was shot and killed in a shameless, cowardly act.
Trooper Tony Radulescu, 44, was doing his job early this morning when a man he’d stopped shot him and left him to die by the side of Highway 16 near Gorst.
The suspect has been identified as Josh Blake, 28. Blake has been in and out of prison for drug charges including manufacturing of meth. At the time of the shooting he was on probation.
WSP Chief John Batiste says the fallen trooper was” well-known and loved in the community.”
After the shooting, Blake disappeared, only to be found hours later at a house in Port Orchard. When SWAT officers approached, Blake shot himself and later died.
During the search, I interviewed one of Radulescu’s fellow troopers Russ Winger.
“It’s difficult. He was a personal friend of mine, a personal co-worker, he worked closely with me…I’ve know this person for 14-15 years,” Winger said. “I’ve been too busy to really think about the tragedy of it right now. It’s going to sink in later.”
Radulescu was a family man, military veteran and always known to have a smile on his face.
I also spoke with Sean Jeu, who said he is a long time friend of Blake’s, said he had a history of drug abuse and always behaved erratically. He said Blake’s recent turn of bad luck may have caused him to snap.
According to Jeu, Blake couldn’t kick a long-running addiction to meth and often carried a handgun. Blake was on probation for drug charges and recently fell on tough times after being laid off his construction job.
Batiste said Radulescu is the 27th WSP trooper killed in the line of duty since 1929.
It’s not everyday that you hear about a pilot and his passenger walking away from a crash into a mountain. But Kyle and Kelly did.
It was a peaceful Saturday afternoon… just before dusk, the two were taking pictures in the North Cascades around Mt. Baker. They decided to turn around and head home… when they spotted some injured snowmobilers at about 8000ft. They needed help so Kyle decided to orchestrate an airdrop to get them survival gear and supplies. They made the drop… and ill let him explain what happened next.

If you don’t live in Western Washington, it may not feel as big of a deal. But 5″ in Lake Stevens is a winter wonderland.
These driveways didn’t shovel themselves! I would have love to have taken a photo of the team effort put in by me and my neighbors to clear everyones driveway in one blast. But we were too busy clearing. 8 houses in all. Find someone’s driveway to clear and make their day. I love my neighbors.
