Lighting up Seattle

Photographer Richard Departee and I got a sneak peek at how the big start on the downtown Macy’s is constructed. Macy’s let us up on their roof to get some video and talk to Jerry the facilities manager who flips the switch.
The star is 161 feet tall and holds 3800 small 7 watt bulbs. The center light is 1000 watt Hallide bulb.
From up here you get a great view of Westlake Park and the surrounding downtown area.
Mimi Jung did a story on the original creator of the star who started the holiday star lighting tradition…50 years ago!
